People lie all the time. I lie when it’s in my best interest. I never claimed to be a saint. However, I am not lying when I say that Walter Neff is a low-down, dirty skunk. I knew how Bitsy had traced Regina’s whereabouts.

The following morning I went to Walter’s posh office where his flashy blonde secretary offered me her best beauty pageant smile and a seat in the reception room. She went into the inner office and came back saying that Walter would be with me in a moment.

Nobody knows Walter like I do. I immediately rushed into the hallway to discover Walter sneaking out a back door and heading for the stairwell. I grabbed the back collar of his coat and swung the little weasel against the wall.

Walter gasped. “Geez, Toots!” He held up his hands as if to protect his face. When no blows landed, Walter peeked out from behind his hands and said, “It’s been a while.”

“Not long enough. Now I can spill your dirty deeds in the hallway, or we can speak privately in your office. You choose.”

“You win. Let’s go back to my office.”

I pushed Walter toward his office. Begrudgingly, he unlocked the back door and I followed the man inside. Taking off his overcoat, Walter exposed a fleshy body encased in an expensive suit and Ferragamo loafers. He also sported a diamond pinky ring. That was new. Business must be good.

“Why did you run?” I asked as Walter sat behind his desk, putting as much space between himself and me as he could.

“It’s always unpleasant when I see you.”

“You thought it might have to do with Bitsy Beamer.”

Walter’s eyes opened wide. “Who?”

“Hildegard Elizabeth Beamer. The woman who was killed recently.”

“I think I read about it in the paper. Your horse stomped on her. Correct?”

“Cute, Walter. I’m here to discuss your arrangement with Regina Keller of tracing Bitsy’s movements from time to time.”

“You know I can’t divulge information about my clients,” Walter said, twiddling his thumbs.

That action made me want to grab one of Walter’s thumbs and bend it backwards, but I remained calm. “You’re not denying Regina Keller was a client.”

“I’m not saying she was either.”

“I’m leaving this office and going to drop a dime on you with Detective Drake. You are somehow involved with the murder of Bitsy Beamer.”

“Murder? The paper said it was an accident. Hey, what are you not telling me, Toots?”

“What are you not telling me, Walter?”

“Why are you saying that Beamer dame’s death was murder?”

“Because I know it was murder.” Yes, I broke my promise to Detective Drake.

Walter narrowed his eyes and peered at me. “Well, if it was murder, I had nothing to do with it.”

“I think you did in an indirect way.”

“Nope. Nada. No way.” Walter pointed a fat little sausage of a finger at me. “You’re not pinning a murder rap on me.”

“Let me tell you what I think happened.”

“Be my guest, Toots.” He leaned back in his leather chair.

“Regina Keller hires you to investigate Bitsy Beamer in the Hamptons once a year.
